JAMES CLAY
Composer | Improviser

James Clay (b. 1997) is a composer, improviser, and practice-based researcher from Newcastle upon Tyne, whose work often focusses on the intersections between sound and place, and how sound affects experience.
James' practice exists on the boundaries between contemporary classical, improvisation, noise, and sound art, exploring durationality, alternative approaches to tuning, and the close interaction between the textural and timbral aspects of sound.
James obtained his PhD in Music Composition from Newcastle University in 2025, and is an Associate Lecturer in Music. He is the Music Director of Newcastle-based contemporary music ensemble Sensible Prices, and releases music under the name Elsmer.
